The Mclean brothers, Norman and Paul, grew up in the wild Missoula, Montana mountains where they spent their youth fly fishing with their father John, a Presbyterian minister. We see the boys grow and learn about life through their father and his lessons on fly fishing. Norman leaves town for six years to study at collage, while Paul becomes an expert fisherman, upon his return Norman finds love with Jesse Burns and Paul has become a fearless reporter in a nearby town. The boys reunite and continue with their love of fly fishing and as time passes it becomes clear to Norman that Paul is in trouble with gambling and has racked up a huge debt. After being offered a teaching job in Chicago Norman plans on marrying Jesse and bringing Paul along, but Paul is destined to stay in Montana forever.
