In Canton, Mississippi, a 10-year-old black girl called Tonya Hailey is viciously raped and beaten by two white racist rednecks and left for dead on the side of a road. When the little girls father Carl Lee finds out he shoots and kills both boys while entering the courthouse in front of a large crowd, which causes a rebirth of the K.K.K. in the area. Young lawyer Jake Tyler Brigance is defending Carl Lee, he also has a 10-year-old daughter and would like to see Carl go free with justification that he did the right thing. With the help of Ellen Roark (a lawyer in training) Jake stands alone against the town as he stands up for Carl Lee and against the racist community they lives in.
