Aboard a slave ship in 1839 traveling from Cuba to the U.S. the Africanslaves led by Cinque take over. Hoping for freedom the reach land and are soon put back in chains in the U.S. where they await trial, but none of them speak any English and it seems as though they are doomed to die after killing their captors. Abolitionist lawyer Roger Sherman Baldwin decides to take their case, arguing that the slaves where all free men stolen into slavery but it all lies on what the judge decides at the Supreme Court.
