In the early 60’s at Saint Nicolas Parish in the Bronx, charismatic Priest, Father Flynn is trying to modernize the school at bit and bring the outside world in, so they aren’t so separate from their surrounding community. Sister Aloysius Beauvier has a bad feeling about Father Flynn, but all the other nuns and students love him including the ever hopeful Sister James. When Sister James witnesses something strange she reports it to Sister Aloysius who then uses it to bring down Father Flynn, believing that the Father has interfered with a troubled young student, though their is no evidence. With all her power Sister Aloysius strives to create a half-truth out of the scraps of stories surrounding the event, innocent or not Father Flynn’s life has been turned upside down and now Sister James also doesn’t know who to believe.
