During the battle of France in World War II, the allied soldiers from Belgium, the British Empire and France were cut off and surrounded by the German army on the beaches of Dunkirk for over a week. With over 400,000 men stranded like sitting ducks on the beach there was little hope of survival or making it back home. Told over three interwoven time periods we see a group of young soldiers stuck on the beach trying to survive (1 week), a British civilian family on their yacht sailing to Dunkirk to rescue as many as they can (1 day), and three Royal Air Force spitfire pilots in the air protectingthe British down below from enemy fire (1 hour).
