A few years after the Civil War, Captain Jefferson Kyle Kidd, traveling from town-to-town telling the news of presidents, queens, feuds, adventures and catastrophes, runs into a young 10-year-old girl called Johanna. Johanna was taken in as a child by the Kiowa people and raised as one of their own, but now left alone in a hostile world Captain Kidd vows to deliver Johanna to her biological aunt and uncle against her will. Traveling hundreds of miles through rough terrain, Kidd and Johanna face unforgiving wilderness and sinister types along the way, though Kidd realizes he may be just as lost in life as Johanna and the two go out in search for a place that either can call home.
