Years before her run in with Maxine and the film crew, Pearl lives a seemingly normal life as a young farm girl in 1918, caring for her German immigrant parents while waiting for her husband, Howard, to return form the war. The influenza pandemic has swept the nation but all Pearl cares about is leaving town and becoming a star on the big screen, after meeting a young projectionist, Pearl is inspired to audition for a dance group and get her way out. However things start to fall apart when Pearl comes to breaking point with her overbearing mother, and after the audition doesn’t go to plan, she snaps and unleashes hell on everybody she knows, setting in motion the future events to come.
