Based on the true story of Austrian mountaineer, Heinrich Harrer, who in 1939 left his pregnant wife to climb a mountain in Pakistan. Being that World War II just broke out, Heinrich and his friend Peter are arrested and placed in a war camp in the Himalayan foothills. After a daring escape the two make it to the untouchable city of Tibet where foreigners are not usually allowed to enter. Once settled, Peter soon marries and settles down, while Heinrich develops a friendship with the Dalai Lama and the two learn about each others cultures, customs, beliefs and histories. After a while the war at home ends, although now China has come to Tibet to takeover, unsure of what to do, Heinrich is encouraged by the Dalai Lama to return home and form a connection with his now 8-year-old son.
