After witnessing the murder of an old friend, upper-class socialite Claire Gregory is put under constant police protection in her Manhattan townhouse. Mike Keegan has just been promoted to detective and has been assigned to the case on night shift. Over a few nights Mike and Claire develop feelings for one another but Mike is married and has a son, and Claire also has a partner. The conflict inside Mike divides him from his family and distracts him from doing his job properly, as the police are expecting the murderer Joey Venza to show up and try to kill Claire so she doesn’t identify him in a line-up.
