The Libertine

The disastrous story of John Wilmot, the Earl of Rochester, who in the 17th century drove himself to an early grave through constant drinking and debauchery. John was a renowned poet and playwright with disdain for his audience, he was a close friend of King Charles II who commissioned him to create a play to perform to the French Ambassador. The play was a horrendous satire of the Kings reign, though John who was bothered by nobody found himself falling for a young theater actress, Elizabeth Barry, whom he trained to become a great performer. After spending time in hiding after the Kings fury, John was sick with syphilis that would eventually kill him, spending his remaining time in the countryside with his miserable wife, John would prove to be one of the most unlikable and vulgar human beings right to the end.
