In 1927, young Russian Jewish girl Fegele is separated from her father when he travels to America in search of opportunity for his family, soon after Fegele escapes an attack on her village and flees in search of her father. After she arrives in England and is given the name Suzie, she is adopted and raised there. A few years later Suzie is taken to Paris because of her singing voice, to join a singing dance troupe. Once in Paris Suzie befriends a Russian dancer named Lola, together they go to work for an opera company where Lola meets Italian opera singer Dante and immediately works her magic on him. Meanwhile Suzie has taken an interest in Cesar, a mysterious gypsy performing horseman. When the War nears Paris, Suzie’s Jewish heritage puts her in danger, she must leave Cesar and Lola behind in search for her father in America.
