Filmmaker Toby Grummett is in rural Spain, struggling with a new production when he comes across an old movie he made as a student project ten years earlier, ‘The Man Who Killed Don Quixote’. Toby discovers the small town he shot the film in is just around the corner, and when he visits he finds the old shoemaker he cast as Don Quixote has fallen into the delusion that he really is the Spanish nobleman. The shoemaker mistakes Toby for his faithful servant Sancho Panza, and suddenly the two are swept up on an adventure together. Falling in and out of modern reality and historical tales, Don Quixote and Toby push and pull towards quests and dangers involving a Russian oligarch called Alexei and his abused partner Angelica, who played a small role in Toby’s original film. With a deadline and a boss breathing down his neck, Toby must get back to reality, but his feelings toward Angelica pull him toward legendary hero status.
