The Serpent and the Rainbow

Harvard anthropologist Dennis Alan is in the Amazon studying rare herbs and medicines when he is called back home to investigate a drug used in Haitian Vodou which creates real-life zombies. Being sent by a pharmaceutical company to Haiti, which is in the middle of a revolution, Dennis finds himself lost and in danger as he seeks out Christophe, a man who apparently died and turned up several years later. Dennis works with Dr. Marielle Duchamp to find the creator of this unique powder that has the ability to stop most brain function and render a person seemingly dead for a time, however the subject is still fully aware of their surroundings though unable to move, speak or show any sign of life. Captain Dargent is a commander and voodoo expert who wants Dennis to leave Haiti, appearing in his visions and threatening him with horrors unimaginable, though Dennis chooses to stay and suffer the consequences in order to bring back the powder.
