The Zookeeper’s Wife

Based on the true story of the keepers and family who ran and lived in the Warsaw zoo during the German invasion in World War II. Jan and his wife Antonina Zabinska own the zoo but are kept under close guard by German soldiers on watch for any escaped or free Jews to capture. Even though it was punishable by death Jan goes out each day and rescues Jews and hides them in the pig scraps in the back of his truck, he brings them to the house at the zoo and they live in the basement. Antonina plays the piano each night when the German watch has left and the Jews are free to come upstairs, until the mornings when they must return to the cellar. By the time the war was over the Zabinska’s had sheltered 300 Jews right under the German’s noses, and the zoo is still alive today.
